Fishing Tournaments – Marlin Fishing in Kona Hawaii
Complete List of Kona Marlin Fishing Tournaments in 2021
The waters off the coast of Kailua-Kona Hawaii are one of the most accessible and prolific marlin fisheries in the world. There are few places where anglers can literally catch a blue marlin just a few hundred yards from the harbor. The fishing grounds are also shielded by towering volcanoes that protect the coastal areas from the persistent trade winds on the island, making a day fishing in Kona feel more like a calm boat ride on an inland lake. Finally, the fishery in Kona is productive year-round for Blue Marlin, Striped Marlin, Shortbilled Spearfish, Yellowfin Tuna, Dorado and Wahoo. For all these reasons, Kona Hawaii is a favored destination for globe-trotting, big game sportfishing enthusiasts seeking to compete for cash and prizes.
Each year, anglers from around the world descend on the tiny village of Kailua-Kona Hawaii to do battle with giant blue marlin in the pursuit of big money cash and prizes. Kona is host to about a dozen fishing tournaments each year. While many tournaments focus on species like blue marlin, there are a number of events that target other species such as Yellowfin Tuna, Wahoo and Dorado. There are even tournaments tailored to small boat owners under 20 feet in length and a few events just for the ladies. Because the fishing in Kona occurs so close to the island, just a few hundred yards to a few miles from shore, anglers participating in these events spend more of the day with lines in the water. As a result, expect to see a good number of fish weighed at the scales each afternoon around 4pm. While most Marlin fishing tournaments are designed to encourage the tag and release of smaller marlin, the fish that are brought to the scales will typically be much larger and range between 500 pounds to over 1,000 pounds! If you are looking for a fun and exciting activity that is great for the whole family, consider fishing a tournament in Kona on your next visit to the Big Island of Hawaii.
