Kona fishing report – May 2017
Kona Fishing ReportKona Fishing Report – May – 2017 | The Big Island of Hawaii – May turned out to be a fantastic month here in Kona. The weather calmed down, the trade winds set into their normal pattern and with them came the fish. The first half of the month brought a really good marlin bite and along with it a number of good fish in the 500+ pound class. In the first few weeks of May we tagged and released 6 or 8 Blue Marlin and missed or pulled the hooks on more than that many more. In addition to the good fishing for Blue Marlin, the Tuna showed up in full force and the fishing for Ahi has been consistent ever since. During the month we caught several nice fish and had one double header on Ahi as well.
May is the month when we make that transition from Winter fishing to Summer fishing. As such, a lot of the winter species are still hanging around and the Summer species like Ono and Ahi start showing up. We are fortunate that the Blue Marlin are here year round. One of the most abundant spring time species we catch here in Kona is the Shortbilled Spearfish. These fish migrate through the Hawaiian islands from March through June and can be abundant at times. This was the case during May. These fish also happen to be one of the best eating fish we catch in Hawaii.
If you are planning a trip to the Big Island of Hawaii this Summer and want to enjoy a day of fishing, you can plan on possibly catching any number of species such as Blue Marlin, Ahi, Ono and the occasional Mahi Mahi and Spearfish. Keep in mind, that Summer months of June through September are the peak months for fishing and also tournament season in Kona. The best boats will be booked out months in advance, so be sure to visit our website, check availability and book your fishing charters right on the calendar on our website to get our lowest available rates.
We hope to see you in Kona later this Summer!
