Report – Excellent Fishing here in Kona
Kona Fishing ReportOctober 2, 2016 – The Big Island, Hawaii. After a few weeks of the waning moon and some inconsistent Tradewinds, the fishing has started to pick up again. Recent strong Trade Winds have pushed some good schools of bait fish into the area, and the water temperatures remain in the low-to-mid 80s. All of this, combined with the next few weeks of a building Moon, could set up continued excellent fishing here in Kona.
The past few weeks have been a bit slower than the first part of September when multiple bites were more the norrm than the exception. On Saturday, the new moon, we caught a shortbilled spearfish on a 3/4 day charter and on Sunday we tagged a small blue marlin right out of the gate. There are still some really good blue marlin showing up here and there as well, with several in the 600-900 pound class being tagged and released recently.
In addition to the blue marlin and spearfish, we are still seeing an occasional Ono (Wahoo) here and there as well as a few Mahi Mahi moving in as well. The lingering affects of the Super El Nino are keeping the water warmer than usual, and that means an extended fishing season here in Kona.
