May 2016 Hawaii Fishing News Report
Kona Fishing ReportFishing News Report May 19, 2016 – Kailua-Kona, Hawaii – May got off to a bit of a slow start with inconsistent fishing and squally weather, but things kicked into high gear the last week and everything turned around. Most of the boats are getting multiple shots on shortbilled spearfish on most trips along with the occasional striped marlin. This week, the Tuna action turned on with a number of really good fish in the 150-240 pound range being weighed. In addition to the really good Spearfish bite and Tunas showing up, good numbers of Blue Marlin are also showing up as well.
As good as 2015 was for Blue Marlin, we are already ahead of the 2015 tally this year and the fishing has been consistent. While nobody has yet to weigh a grander this year, there have been two fish called in the 900 pound range, one tagged and released and one broken off and one fish “Well Over” 1,000 that broke off but not before some great photos captured the massive girth on the old girl. Today (Wednesday May 18th) we went 2 for 2 on Blue Marlin 150/200 pounds respectively on a 3/4 day charter and over the past week have had multiple days with multiple hookups on Spearfish, Blue Marlin and Striped Marlin. To round things out, the Ono (Wahoo) have started showing up as well. The month of May usually marks the beginning of their migration through the Hawaiian waters off Kona and you can expect that the bite will only improve over the coming weeks.
